The path of some Muslim youths in our society, in terms of integrity or deviance, is influenced by their interaction with the environment in which they live and the ideas that arise around them, which are reflected in their understanding of Islam, right or wrong. No matter how high a person’s status, they are liable to be instigated and deviated. There is a lesson in the Kharijites, such as Abd al-Rahman ibn Muljam, a man who memorized the Qur’an, and al-Faruq Umar ibn al-Khattab praised him because of his profound interest in the Book of Allah. Then he went off the rails, accusing Muslims of blasphemy and killing Ali ibn Abi Talib, the Commander of the Faithful. It is a lesson for the Umma about the importance of adhering to revelation and following the path of those of knowledge and religion because man does not move in a vacuum of ideas. In this day and age, when extremist ideology has spread, it is easy for ideas to become infected with that which distorts them, whether by adding to them in ways that contradict them or by distracting from them in ways that invalidate them. At Wassat for Research and Studies, we work to address these ideas and more.
